Sold, to the man in the purple suit!

Sorry, you can’t have it. The old General has set Chevrolet Volt #1 aside for a top spot at the General Motors Heritage Collection Museum in Detroit. But, if your bid is high enough, you can still be the owner of Chevrolet Volt #2.

That’s right, the first paying customer for the long-anticipated full-electric bowtie will be a bidder at the Chevy Volt Charity Auction. The money goes to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation (DPSF), supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education initiatives in the Detroit Public Schools (DPS).

Sounds like a worthy cause, but does anybody even live in Detroit anymore?

The EPA just announced that the Nissan Leaf will get the equivalent of 99 miles per gallon, according to the official EPA fuel economy label rating. Of course, the Leaf burns juice, not gas, so that’s why it’s the “equivalent of 99 MPG.”

At 99 MPG, the EPA figures the Leaf will cost owners about 500 bucks a year to propel, which is about a third of what it costs to drive the similarly-sized Nissan Versa for a year.

The rub (there’s always a rub)—the Leaf gets 99 MPG, but only goes 77 miles on a single charge. Can’t they just give it a bigger tank?

The General is ready and champing at the bit to start shipping the long-awaited Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid. Only one problem; the EPA can’t figure out the Volt’s mileage (which varies wildly depending on your source), so the whole fleet is tied up in red tape. Or, is it black electrical tape?

The M55 Beast

Fresh off the 2010 SEMA Show held in Las Vegas last week, we’re happy to report that hybrids, EVs and alternative-fuel vehicles of all sorts enjoyed a strong presence. From the vehicles that won the X-Prize to crazy experimental sports cars, it’s reassuring to see the green car movement is still on track and growing.

But the best alternative vehicle we saw is the $35,000 M55 Hybrid Bike. Yeah, you read that right, $35,000. It’s called, “The Beast,” and it’s made in Europe using the finest bicycle components available. The frame is a custom design, crafted from aluminum and carbon fiber, and the completed bike looks like it's straight out of a Philip K. Dick novel. If you have an extra 35K burning a hole in your green jeans, you can preorder yours here.

We’ve showcased some very fast and very cool DIY EVs on this blog before. And today’s EV may not be the fastest (though it’s up there) it is certainly the coolest.

Based in Croatia, Mat Rimoc built this amazing all-electric 1986 E30 BMW. This green machine does sub 12-second runs and has beaten a Tesla Roadster in a street race.
