The United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu is convinced that electric vehicles are our future. In fact, sources close to him are reporting that he went so far as to say that "if it were up to me, I would put every cent into electric cars."
A bold, although unconfirmed, statement when considering the hydrogen vs. electric debate. However, this is inline with what the Department of Energy has been doing over the last year; financially supporting the development of plug-ins by lending Ford $5.9 billion, Nissan $1.6 billion, Tesla $465 million and Fisker $528 million in loans. Supporting the development of electric vehicles is great, but where is the electric infrastructure going to come from and can our current power plants support the additional load of all-electric cars? The US has excellent reserves of coal, but that is hardly a green solution. Nuclear plants are the more obvious option, but the dangers and byproducts of that can be even more detrimental.
