Since Toyota and Tesla announced their electric-car partnership a few months back, there’s been much anticipation as to what their first joint EV would be. Well, the wait is over and the announcement is anything but exciting. Drum roll please…a RAV4-EV.
Yup, that’s right, a RAV4-EV, just like the one Toyota killed back in 2003 due to underwhelming consumer response. By Toyota’s own admission, the old electric RAV sold less than 300 units per year, so despite massive outcry from Ed Begley Jr. and a few Silicon Valley eco-warriors, they cut the entire program.
This zombie reanimation looks like it’ll hit the streets just about the time the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf. While the Volt is poised to shock the driving public with a $41K price tag and the Leaf with a less shocking $31K, the RAV4-EV comes in at a low-amperage $28K. Which means Toyota will probably the go-to manufacturer for full electrics—unless there’s a recall.

Work stopped deadl here at the DiscoverHybrid offices today when a real live Tesla Roadster appeared outside our headquarters. Sitting connected to an extension cord for a quick charge; this slippery ‘lectric was taunting our lot full of lowly hybrids.
After catching a few photos of the mystery car, the hunt was on for the mysterious owner. But, as the rabid crowd lurched inside to track down the unknown driver, the elusive electric suddenly slipped away without a sound (they do that, no exhaust), leaving only an orange power cord in its wake. Where this electric apparition came from…the world may never know.

To add insult to injury, the new law banning single-occupant Toyota Prius’ from California HOV lanes actually gives the Chevy Volt a free pass.
That’s right, at midnight on December 31, 2010, over 85,000 Toyota Prius owners will have their highly-prized, yellow HOV stickers revoked. That means the days of gliding by in the carpool lanes all by yourself are over—unless you drive a Chevy Volt, a Tesla Roadster or Honda Civic GX.
Though, it seems like a setback for mass hybrid adoption, there’s a little part of us that just can’t wait to see those pretentious Prius pigs (you know who you are) reduced to the level of us common commuters.

Meet the Buckeye Bullet, a student-built, 100% electric-powered land-speed streamliner from the Automotive Research Center at Ohio State University. Earlier this week, the Buckeye Bullet smashed the electric streamliner record at Bonneville at 291 mph.
The next day, they did it again with a tree-shaking 307 mph average (320 top speed). Alas, the team really tried to push it over the top yesterday when clutch carnage stalled their efforts. Stay tuned, these kids are proving that EV technology is most certainly here to stay.

Roger Ebert, movie critic and columnist extraordinaire, has given his latest review subject a hearty “thumbs up.” This time, his finely-honed scrutiny was aimed at the brand new Ford Fusion Hybrid. And not just any Ford Fusion Hybrid, it’s his new daily driver.
Of course, holding title as The Motor Trend Car of the Year, the Ford Fusion Hybrid is no stranger to high praise and accolades. Along with the kudos, Ebert waxes critical about his past autos and gives some insight into his favorite hamlet, Sawyer Michigan.
Remember Rog, driving a hybrid lends some serious cache to your image, but you just can’t park like that, no matter who you are or what you drive.
